iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 2G: Which Should You Buy?

Now, the iPhone 13 Pro was just announced alongside the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 Pro Max on the 14th of September, and a lot of people are asking themselves: should I buy it?

If you were in the market for a new iPhone, which one should you buy? The iPhone 13 Pro or the iPhone 2G? Today, we will compare the two and see which is the right fit for you!

Let's start off with the most obvious difference between the two: the size. The iPhone 2G features a 3.5" display, while the iPhone 13 Pro includes a 6.1" one. While the larger size of the iPhone 13 Pro makes it better for watching content, reading text, playing games, and pretty much everything, the iPhone 2G is far easier to hold in the hand. It fits in everyone's hands, and some people can find the iPhone 13 Pro too large to comfortably hold. The iPhone 13 mini has a 5.4" display, but even that can be far too big for some people with smaller hands, and that phone is beyond the scope of this article. So, which is better, iPhone 2G or iPhone 13 Pro? I'd say HANDS down, the iPhone 2G is better as it is far easier to hold in the hand. You don't need to shuffle your phone around to be able to reach the Control Centre like you'd have to on iPhone 13 Pro. And, the iPhone 2G is perfect if you are under 10 years old and have tiny little hands.

So far, it's:

iPhone 2G 1 - 0 iPhone 13 Pro

Let's talk about the design next. The iPhone 13 Pro features sharper edges and a frosted glass back. The iPhone 2G has a rounded back which is made out of aluminium. Many people say that the iPhone 13 Pro's sharp edges dig into the hands too much and makes it too uncomfortable to hold. However, the iPhone 2G has perfectly smooth edges which does not dig into your hand while you hold it. The iPhone 2G also has a nice black skirt which covers up its privates while also being an antenna cutout. I'd say that due to its skirt, the iPhone 2G is far more modestly dressed than iPhone 13 Pro which has no skirt on the back. Also, aluminium really beats the glass back of the iPhone 13 Pro, since that one can be far too slippery while holding. I'd say on design, the iPhone 2G has the edge (and iPhone 13 Pro has the sharp edge 😜).

Now it's:

iPhone 2G 2 - 0 iPhone 13 Pro

Time to talk about the display. As said before, the iPhone 2G features a 3.5" TFT display with a 320x480 screen resolution at 165ppi. Meanwhile, the iPhone 13 Pro features a 6.1" 2532x1170 display at 460ppi. The iPhone 13 Pro also features an OLED HDR display with 120hz adaptive refresh. All this sounds impressive, however, these are features that most people will not notice in my opinion, so the iPhone 2G is not too far behind in terms of what people will notice in terms of display. Therefore, I will award the iPhone 13 Pro a half a point as HDR, 120hz and far more pixel density are not things most people will notice.

It's:

iPhone 2G 2 - 0.5 iPhone 13 Pro

What about the camera? The iPhone 2G features a single 2MP camera on the back, with no front facing camera. It also has no video support. Meanwhile, the iPhone 13 Pro features three cameras on the back and a FaceTime camera at the front. It has a wide, 3x telephoto and ultrawide 12MP camera system, with Night Mode, Deep Fusion, ProRAW, Portrait Mode, 4K at 60 video recording, Cinematic mode for videos, Slow Motion and more. All these are features that iPhone 2G cannot compare with, so I will be giving iPhone 13 Pro a point.

It's:

iPhone 2G 2 - 1.5 iPhone 13 Pro

Now, let's talk about connectivity. iPhone 2G features a 30-pin data connector, while iPhone 13 Pro features Lightning with a measly 8 pins. Not only that, but the iPhone 2G features a headphone jack. Something that blows iPhone 13 Pro out of the water with this feature notably missing. This is very disappointing from Apple, as it clearly shows a step backwards, both in terms of removal of headphone jack and a step backwards from 30 pin connector to only 8. This is why I am giving 2 points to iPhone 2G, one for headphone jack and one for higher pin connector.

It's:

iPhone 2G 4 - 1.5 iPhone 13 Pro

Let's talk about age now. The iPhone 2G was released in 2007 and the iPhone 13 Pro was just announced in 2021. Some people may say that the iPhone 2G is old, but I prefer the term mature. As the iPhone 2G was released so long ago, it has far more support in terms of parts, repair manuals,  and availability of repair. The iPhone 13 Pro was just released and there is no such information available out there. People have made all sorts of interesting mods and jailbreaks to the iPhone 2G, while the iPhone 13 Pro has none as it just came out. I will give the iPhone 2G a point here as the possibilities are endless with it.

So now it's:

iPhone 2G 5 - 1.5 iPhone 13 Pro

Let's talk about the most important factor to many people: price. The iPhone 13 Pro starts at $999 for 128GB, while you can find the iPhone 2G at around $500 used on eBay. This is a clear win for the iPhone 2G, so I will give it a point.

It's:

iPhone 2G 6 - 1.5 iPhone 13 Pro

Well, we have come to the end. The final score puts iPhone 2G firmly in the lead from iPhone 13 Pro. Clearly, iPhone 2G is a better option to purchase as your main phone in 2021 than iPhone 13 Pro. Many people may suggest that the iPhone 2G is obsolete, slow, and does not support the vast majority of features necessary in 2021. However, I would say that for basic email, taking photos, browsing the web and playing games like Chess (but no more), the iPhone 2G is just right for it. While the iPhone 13 Pro has more features, many of them are irrelevant to the average consumer and they would not notice them in their day to day life. You pay for a lot of fluff with the iPhone 13 Pro while the iPhone 2G just gets the job done.
